A developer proposes 40 townhouse units on a 6 acre parcel of land off Piper Lane and School Street . The units will be visible from the Great Hill conservation trails, dog park and South Acton Historic District. In addition to changing the character of the historic district and conservation land, these units will bring significant additional congestion to School Street, pushing even more traffic onto Piper Road and River Street - making all three roads less safe and passable. While some of the units will be affordable, the town will pay a very high price for these affordable units. Our town has more effective, responsible ways to fill its actual affordable housing needs - elderly and rental housing. Meanwhile, this land can be used to fill another Town goal of open space, adding it to Great Hill Conservation along with the adjacent Gaebel parcel purchased by unanimous vote at Town Meeting in 2008.
